Brazil continues to export significant amounts of coffee in the 2024/25 season. In the first three months of the current crop (from July to September 2024), the total shipped was 12.05 million bags, a record for the first quarter of the season, considering the series from Cecafé (Coffee Exporters Council). In September alone, exports were a record for the month – the series has started in 1990.
This excellent performance is related to the good demand for the Brazilian coffee, especially robusta. International purchasers are looking for the national product due to problems in Vietnam (world’s biggest robusta producer) and regarding the flow of coffee to Europe. Moreover, logistical difficulties in the maritime transport have reinforced the demand for the Brazilian coffee.
Moreover, concerns about the EUDR (EU Deforestation-free Regulation), which should start in 2025, but can be postponed for 2026, also favored Brazilian coffee shipments. Exporters sold more batches to the international market, fearing restrictions of the regulation.
As a result, coffee prices have been increasing significantly in Brazil. This year (from December 28, 2023 to October 14, 2024), the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for arabica coffee type 6, delivered to São Paulo city, rose 50%. The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the robusta type 6, screen 13, Espírito Santo, in turn, upped 87.7%.
